VISA & CUSTOMS
VISA PROCEDURE
Most
visitors to Vietnam need a visa to enter the country. Visas are exempted
for the citizens of the countries, which have signed a bilateral or
unilateral visa exemption agreement with Vietnam; tourist visa may be
valid for 15 to 30 days.
I. Visa
exemption:
Vietnamese people that hold foreign passports and foreigners who are
their husbands, wives and children are exempt from visa requirements to
enter Vietnam and are allowed to stay for not more than 90 days. In
order to be granted visa exemption certificates at Vietnamese
representative offices abroad, overseas Vietnamese need conditions:
1. Foreign-issued permanent residence certificate (PRC) with the
validity of at least six months since the date of entrance.
2. Visa exemption paper (VEP) is granted by Vietnamese appropriate
authorities.
Those who expect to stay more than 90 days must apply for visa according
to current stipulations before their entrance.
Bilateral visa exemption agreement:
1. Citizens of Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and
Laos holding valid ordinary passports are exempt from visa requirements
and are allowed to stay for not more than 30 days.
2. Citizens of China, Bulgaria, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, and Rumania
holding valid ordinary passports for official mission and citizens of 52
countries holding valid diplomatic or official passports are exempt from
visa requirements. The duration of staying is stipulated in certain

Unilateral visa exemption:
1. Visa with 30-day validity is exempted for officials from ASEAN
secretariate holding different kinds of passports.
2. Citizens of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Japan and South Korea
holding different kinds of passports is exempt from visa requirements
and is allowed to stay for not more than 15 days.
Others who want to enter Vietnam must be provided with a visa.
Tourist visa is valid in 30 days.
It is easier to get your visa from a Vietnamese travel agency. The
necessary information to the travel agency includes:
1. Full name
2. Birthday and place of birth
3. Nationality
4. Job
5. Number of your passport
6. Entry and exit dates
7. Country you plan to receive your entry visa from the Vietnamese
embassies or consulates
Vietnamese overseas are required to provide more information:
1. Year and reason to leave Vietnam
2. Leave Vietnam by means
3. Full names and addresses of relations in Vietnam
Visa is issued at the Vietnamese diplomatic offices or consulates in
foreign countries.
Visa is possibly issued at the border gates to those who have written
invitations by a Vietnamese competent agencies or tourists in the tours
organized by Vietnamese international travel companies.
Application files for visa: the entrance application (printed
form); two 4x6 cm photos; passport and fee for the visa issuance.
II. Visa extension:
This service is served by all international travel agents. They can
process your request within 3 or 4 days. In some cases, applicants can
apply directly to the Authority of Immigration
CUSTOMS & FORMALITIES
Arriving in Vietnam, all visitors must fill in declaration forms and
show their luggage to customs officials on request. There are no limited
amounts of foreign currency, objects made of gold, silver, precious
metals and gemstones or plated with silver or gold but visitors must
declare these in detail on the customs forms.
I. Declaration:
The new form (CHY2000) is applied to both the procedure for entry and
exit procedure. In the case where visitors enter or leave again without
having to declare goods according to the regulations, they present only
the former declaration sheet (the yellow sheet) or they can fill the new
declaration sheet. Visitors are requested to mark (x) and completely
fill small framed appropriate N.1 from the N.16 in the form. Visitors
will have to submit this form to the immigration and customs in the
border gates. To shorten the customs procedure, visitors must state
clearly in the customs declaration sheets (yellow and white):
1. The cameras, recording devices and other electronic equipment those
are not intended for personal use.
2. The jewelry, objects in gold and silver, precious stones that are not
intended for personal use.
3. The currency in cash (currency paper, metals and tourist cheques)
worth is more than 7,000 U.S. dollars or other currencies of equivalent
value. The sum dong (Vietnamese currency) in cash does not exceed
15,000,000 VND.
4. If visitors bring video tapes, the customs department will keep
control and restore the visitors in a few days later.
5. The quantity of gold over 300 grams: If visitors are more 3,000 grams
of gold, they must leave this quantity of gold in the bonded warehouse
and the amount of gold should be re-exported.
6. The goods outside the standard applied for baggage must be taxed.
II. Upon arrival in Vietnam:
Visitors have the right products to zero up to 200 cigarettes, 50
cigars, 150 grams of tobacco, and 1.5 liters of alcohol. Other revenues
(which are not prohibited) with a value below $ 300 will be exempt from
taxes. Visitors are not allowed to bring such things:
1. Weapons
2. Ammunition
3. Explosives and firearms products
4. Firecrackers of any kind
5. Opium and all kinds of drugs
6. Toxic chemicals
7. Unhealthy cultural products or hostile to government are not
appropriate to the Vietnamese custom
8. The characters toys harmful to the moral education and social
order...
III. Before leaving Vietnam:
In cases take a quantity of gold exceeds 300 grams, visitors must make a
statement and obtain permission from the State Bank to allow them to
leave Vietnam. Visitors are not allowed to get such things:
1. Weapons
2. Ammunition
3. Explosives
4. Drugs
5. Antiques
6. Wildlife
7. Plants
8. Rare documents relating to national security
Visitors who bring these prohibited goods will be punished according to
Vietnamese law.
